Additional comments

Apart from his very well known work with Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler has contributed to many albums of various artists. The series of "Session Work" is a compilation of these songs. Mark plays guitar on two tracks of Heidi Talbot's album Agels without wings. The album also features John McCusker, Guy Fletcher, Richard Bennett, Michael McGoldrick, Tim O'Brien and Jerry Douglas. Ruth Moody did some vocals on Mark's album Privateering and returned the favour by playing guitar and sing on Ruth's album These wilder things. Not much later, Mark wrote a song for Jimmy Buffet and played guitar on two tracks of his album Songs from St. Somewhere. In 2014 the new album from David Crosby was released on which Mark plays guitar on the opening track. Part of the interview in Rolling Stone: Mark Knopfler plays on the lead track What's broken. "That was a real piece of generosity on his part," says Crosby. "His manager said he usually doesn't record with people, but he might if I send [to] him. I sent him the song and he just called it. He just fucking killed it."

In May 2014, I first heard about the session work of Mark Knopfler playing guitar on a track of Susan Ashton called If this was a dream. It was a promo only and released on at least two compilation albums, one of them called Die Schönsten Duette Der Welt which was released in 2010. It was also part of a very rare 6 track promo CD called "Jono Vrana original songs for films and soundtracks", click here for more information.

JJ Cale passed away on 26th July 2013. To honor JJ’s legacy, a year after his passing, Eric Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for Eric Clapton & Friends: The Breeze, An Appreciation of JJ Cale which was released 29th July 2014. With performances by Eric Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs played by these musicians and is named for the 1972 single “Call Me The Breeze.” Mark Knopfler's contribution can be heard on two tracks which were previously unreleased demos by JJ Cale: Someday and Train to nowhere (with vocals by Mark Knopfler, Eric Clapton and Don White). Various tracks have been recorded in Mark's own British Grove studios.

Bryan Ferry has sampled Mark's nylon guitar work from an earlier album on the song Lost on his new album, Avonmore. So, it is actually an old studio session, probably dating back to recording time of Boys and Girls, end of 1984. Mark and Bonnie Raitt were guests at Paul Brady's Vicar Street, Dublin, show on the 26th of October, 2001. Mark features on Baloney Again.

James Taylor has released a new album, Before this world. The online record store Target is selling an exclusive edition with two songs which were recorded during the Sailing to Philadelphia sessions; Pretty boy Floyd and Diamond Joe. Mark plays on Diamond Joe but does not sing on either of the two tracks. Click here to see some more details about these tracks.

Note: since this are all official recordings, I do NOT copy or trade this material. It's just meant for people who are looking for songs with Mark Knopfler and want to check on which albums these songs can be found.
