Additional comments | To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the classic music TV show Old Grey Whistle Test, Radio 2 has commissioned a 16-part series entitled Old Grey Whistle Test 40 hosted by who else but Bob Harris. Starting in August 2011, the programmes feature classic archive, new performances and interviews with artists who appeared on the original series and will be recorded at the historic Maida Vale studios. Mark Knopfler is featured in the 7th episode which of course also features the live performance of Sultans of swing that Dire Straits played in the studio of Old Grey Wistle Test and Mark Knopfler is recalling the rise of Dire Straits. This episode was broadcasted on BBC Radio 2 on the 5th October 2011. One week later, Mark Knopfler appeared in another radio program called The thing about Hank. Hank Marvin influenced a generation of guitarists including Mark Knopfler. The programme explores Marvin’s unique sound, which Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page reveals he tried hard to emulate as a teenager. And Page was not the only aspiring guitar hero adapting Hank’s style. Mark Knopfler recounts his school days explaining how he and his pals learnt The Shadows’ tunes after class. Broadcasted on BBC Radio 4 on the 11th October 2011. Both shows have very good sound quality. |
