Additional comments

Apart from his very well known work with Dire Straits, Mark Knopfler has contributed to many albums of various artists. The series of "Session Work" is a compilation of these songs.

Mark plays guitar on Dead on the water. Article on the internet about his Randall's new album: "His new album, Devil Music, scheduled for a September 18 release (2015), features old friends and great musicians Chuck Leavell and Derek Trucks, but it’s the guest appearance by Mark Knopfler, a musician he hasn’t known for years, that may be the most satisfying. Renowned music engineer Chuck Ainlay (Dire Straits, Eric Clapton, Vince Gill) suggested that Bramblett send a few songs from the upcoming album to Knopfler just to see if he wanted to perform on one. While he didn’t think there was much chance, Bramblett sent him a couple. Knopfler said he would love to play on a song Bramblett wrote called Dead on the Water. “It’s one of the great honors of my career,” Bramblett said. “I was just so happy. It was wonderful to know that a musician like that, someone like Knopfler, would hear one of my songs and want to play on it.” Mark plays guitar on Shine on me which is the first single from Dan Auerbach's new solo album Waiting on a song. Mark Knopfler says: "Dan Auerbach is his own man. He goes from strength to strength. It was great to be a part of his record. Walk on, Dan." Not before 2017, I heard of the track Let it die by Ellie Goulding which was released in 2015. According to the CD-booklet, Mark Knopfler plays electric guitar on that track. In November 2017, a new bootleg series box set from Bob Dylan was released. It features 4 tracks featuring Mark Knopfler and Pick Withers (disc 3 - Rare and Unreleased). It seems that the track Ye shall be changed is the same take as earlier released on the The Bootleg Series, vol.3 (see Session Work VII). In January 2018, the new album from Tommy Emmanuel was released. On the official site from Tommy, he released a video of the track and he says: "This video is one of my favorite songs from Accomplice One, that I recorded with one of the best artists out there – Mark Knopfler. When I approached Mark about playing on my album, he told me he would love to but it has to be one of his songs and none of that fast stuff. I immediately concurred, as I love all his compositions. I made my way to his studio in London and we sat down with our acoustic guitars and he sang me the song, “You don’t want to get you one of those”. It’s brilliantly written, and honestly and humbly performed. We recorded it like a performance, playing and singing in the same room. We purposely left it raw and didn’t try to polish it up. It was a great experience for me to be directed by such an accomplished artist as Mark." Mark is among a number of artists who have contributed to Sir Cliff Richard’s 80th birthday album, Music … The air that I breathe, released 30th October 2020. Mark plays on track 6, PS Please.

Track 19; in an article Leo Sayer said: “I went to AIR Studios in Oxford Street,” he said. “Mark Knopfler was recording in the next room and Frank Zappa was recording in the next room to that. I took over Studio One, the big studio. They couldn’t even get in. I had all these musicians and singers. Every five minutes Frank Zappa would wander in and ask “what are you recording” and then the next moment Van Morrison would walk in and then Mark Knopfler and they all used to just sit around the studio. The backing vocals are all those guys which was just one of those peculiar things that happened. I was burning money in there but I decided to do the track."  The track "Passion" is a B-side from the 1986 single "Solo" and has the supposed backing vocals of Mark Knopfler.

Around the time of the recording session, Tommy posted this on Facebook:

The album A Prairie Home Companion - Duets features 18 tracks including The next time I'm in town. It is a short track (just 2:06!) that also consists of two different recorded versions. The recording which features Mark Knopfler starts somewhere in the middle of the track and suddenly ends during a singing part, a bit of a mess if you ask me. All in all, it is just 48 seconds of music featuring Mark Knopfler. Below a scan of the CD booklet with details of this peculiar track:

In 2016, long-time Shadows drummer Brian Bennett released an album of film music by British composer John Barry. Among the guest artists on the album, Mark Knopfler plays on All the time in the world, a song from the soundtrack of the James Bond film On Her Majesty's Secret Service with Hal David lyrics which became a huge hit for jazz great Louis Armstrong. Mark, a lifelong Shadows fan, says that All the time in the world was one of Barry's personal favourites. It was such a thrill to be asked to contribute to this version by Brian, one of my all-time favourite great drummers and a fine composer and arranger himself. To find myself playing a wonderful John Barry composition with Brian Bennett on drums was an unforgettable experience,” Mark adds, “For guitar aficionados, I dropped my usual style for this recording and used an old Fender Stratocaster with heavy gauge strings, playing it with a pick instead of my fingers and using the tremolo arm on the instrument to create vibrato rather than my neck hand.”

In 2012, a CD was released with various artists paying a tribute to Chet Atkins. Some more info below:

Mark Knopfler plays on the title track Slightly above below average together with all guitar players involved in this project:
