On 11th July 2007, Mark
Knopfler was made an
honorary Doctor of Music at Sunderland
University for his outstanding achievements in the field of music. This
picture is taken on that day. Not 100% sure, but it's most likely that Mark
received this guitar from Dobro as a gift. Dobro is a registered trademark, now owned by Gibson Guitar Corporation. When Gibson acquired the trademark in 1994, the company announced that it would defend its right to Dobro's exclusive use. See here, here. here, here and here pictures of an identical guitar. This guitar has a special story, told me by the
owner. It was actually a guitar owned by Mark Knopfler and given to his
guitar tech Ron Eve. The guitar was used on the original artwork for the 7
inch single Money for nothing, but ultimately the record label chose
a different image for the cover. See here a compilation of this alternative artwork featuring this guitar. |
